The best filament and colors for a 3D printed QR code
Material and color combination decide whether your QR code scans on the first try. Here's what works and what to avoid.
PLA, PETG or TPU
| Material | Pros | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Easy, cheap, huge color range, great detail | Stands, plaques, keychains, cards |
| PETG | Water, moderate heat and impact resistant | Coasters, outdoor signs, everyday keychains |
| TPU | Flexible | Pet or backpack tags (taller relief) |
For most projects, matte PLA is the best choice: no glare, easy to print and excellent detail. If the piece will get wet or sit in the sun, switch to PETG.
Matte beats silk
Silk or glossy filaments look great but reflect light, and the camera sees white spots on dark modules. Always use a matte finish for the code relief. The base can be satin.
Color combinations that work
| Base | Relief | Contrast | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| White | Black | ≈ 15:1 | Excellent |
| Yellow | Black | ≈ 11:1 | Excellent, very visible |
| Beige | Brown | ≈ 6:1 | Good, warm |
| White | Navy | ≈ 13:1 | Excellent, elegant |
| White | Red | ≈ 5:1 | Good in decent light |
| Gray | Black | ≈ 5:1 | Borderline |
| Red | Orange | ≈ 1.8:1 | Won't scan |
QRelieve computes the contrast of the two colors you pick and warns you if it's too low, so you can try your brand colors without printing.
Useful accessories
- 10 × 2 mm neodymium magnets for the fridge magnet.
- 25 mm split rings for keychains.
- Adhesive felt for coaster and stand bottoms.
- Filament dryer: wet PETG strings and dirties the code.

Using your brand colors without losing contrast
If your brand is red or green, you don't have to give it up: use the brand color for the text and border and keep the maximum-contrast pair for the code. Or use your dark brand color for the relief on a white base: nearly any dark blue, green or purple works. What doesn't work is pairing two shades of the same intensity, even if they're different hues.
How much filament each object uses
| Object | Approx. weight | Approx. material cost |
|---|---|---|
| Keychain | 6–8 g | $0.15 |
| Business card | 10–12 g | $0.25 |
| Fridge magnet | 12–18 g | $0.35 |
| Coaster | 25–35 g | $0.70 |
| Wifi plaque | 40–60 g | $1.20 |
| Table stand | 40–60 g | $1.20 |
Indicative values with PLA at about $20 per kilo and 15% infill. The second-color relief only uses 1–3 g, so one dark spool lasts for hundreds of codes.
Look after your filament
- Store spools in sealed bags with desiccant: wet filament bubbles and strings.
- If PETG crackles while printing, dry it for 4–6 hours at 65 °C.
- Purge the nozzle when switching from dark to light so no residue ends up on the base.
